Finding your way to Success - “Orienting” Communications

Communication is tricky. There are some people, with whom it just clicks. You naturally talk and the connection just so happens. It feels like you have known this person forever. But in most cases - especially when it really matters - it doesn’t work. Does this sound familiar to you?

You give your best shot being nice, deliver your well thought through story but on the receiving end it somehow goes awry. Sometimes, for no reason the communication takes a bad turn and the mood shifts. Your good intentions go unnoticed or are even considered an insult? (I know this very well from discussions in my family…)

Imagine you become this person who always finds the right tone when speaking to others. That person who connects easily and seems to effortlessly lead any communication and in the end always gets what he wants? Like having a map and compass to lead you through the communication and lets you reach the goal.

The Connecting Communication Compass is just that. There is a “map” for how to communicate with each of the eight types on the compass. Once you have identified which type your opposite belongs to, you know exactly what to say and the compass will keep you on track.

Here is what you need to do

  • start the communication with one possible style based on your observations of potential clues
  • observe how the other person reacts
  • adjust your communication style based on the observable feedback
  • once you have found the right direction, stay on it

The more you use the Compass, the more natural it will become and soon you will feel like having your “built-in” Communication GPS always there to guide you.

„Throw a few communication baits and see which one resonates.“

The Communication Compass Blueprint

The idea behind the “Connecting Communication Compass” is to operationalize communication. It’s not about understanding all psychological reasons for why people are the way they are. We don’t want to categorize people into fixed personality boxes but observe the situation and react accordingly. Like driving a car in winter. You need to react to how it behaves on the road with snow and ice. For this, you don’t need to know exactly how the suspension is constructed and how the power is generated. (there are other questions, where this matters but in the actual communication situation it is not)

We have to observe the behaviour and listen carefully not only to what was said, but more importantly to how it was said. Which words were used? How did the other person react to what I said before?

The “Communication Compass Blueprint” is a 5 weeks online training program taking you step by step to becoming the communication pro. You will learn to spot the clues and listen to key wordings telling you which type you are facing. You can watch one video per day recorded with professional actors, backed by supporting scripts to download for taking notes and future reference.

What makes the Compass so special?

No labelling, just observing

Many communication models come from the perspective of wanting to characterise people. They describe the character and give generic tips on how to deal with the different character types. It is like putting a label on each person, which defines the interaction.

The ‘Connecting Communication Compass’ originates from the field of communication and provides specific tips for communicating with different types as we observe them in the specific situation. Each person can exhibit all types, so we have to continuously adapt our own style. We observe and do not construe. When we observe we are with the other person, when we interpret we are with ourselves.

Process over Content

CCMs (content communication models) are usually used in everyday life. They focus on the content to be delivered. Too little attention is paid to the how and whether the message is received. (”What” is more important than “How”).

The Compass, on the other hand, focuses on the communication process and adapts the communication to the other person’s needs. (”How” is more important than “What”) You make sure that the other person feels good and is relaxed, so that the content can be understood and processed .
